Individualisés en 1974 par Dunner et Fieve (20), les cycles rapides correspondent à un sous-groupe de patients ayant au moins quatre épisodes dysthymiques par an. Pour les auteurs qui en ont fait la description, ces patients seraient toujours des bipolaires : en fait, cette modalité évolutive, particulièrement invalidante et ce d'autant plus qu'elle est peu sensible à la lithioprophylaxie, s'observe également chez des monopolaires ayant des accès dépressifs récurrents.
